Overview
There are many Filipinos across the globe, and watching iWantTFC is one of their past times to feel like home again. Filipinos with other ethnic partners have also shown a fascination with Filipino movies.
Challenge
Optimize user experience while attracting other ethnic audiences
Understand both groups’ pain points and create design solutions that provide convenience by meeting their needs.
Research
Usability Testing
Starting with research, I had individual meetings with Filipino participants. I asked questions that allowed me to see their step-by-step process in finding content. These questions gave me a lot of insights.
Pretend that you know what movie/TV series you want to watch, Can you show me how you would do that?
Pretend that you don’t know what movie/TV series you want to watch, Can you show me how you would do that?
What issues do you have with the site?
What improvements would you like to see?
When I interviewed the Filipinos, I learned that the other ethnic friends and partners were also enjoying Filipino movies. I saw this as an opportunity for iWantFC’s growth inside and outside the Filipino audiences. As I was collecting data, I was aware of these questions:
What are the differences between Group A and Group B, in terms of looking for content to watch?
What do they prioritize?
What are their expectations?
Synthesize
Affinity Map
After collecting data, similar frustrations became more apparent. I understood that participants were experiencing issues in certain areas in the process. I categorized these into three phases: learning, filtering, and viewing.
Persona
Two types of audiences: reading and visual learners
Ideate
User Flows
To get a clearer picture of the users’ experience, I created user flows. Below shows the results that users encounter based on the paths taken.
Key Findings:
During the learning stage, majority of the users were confused about the buttons; waiting for something to happen
Filipinos only look for favorite movie stars by recognizing them on the images— visual learners
Filipinos are more interested and engaged in watching TV series
Other ethnicities spend longer times looking for content to watch
Other ethnicities’ spend time reading the description, genre and preview— reading learners
Other ethnicities only like one-time viewing movies
While viewing the full-screen, majority of the users are frustrated about the details that constantly appeared
Sitemap
I then created before site map to see how the pages are categorized. Under “browse” page, users are only given an option of all genres. I had the idea to separate movies from TV shows, and from there, I divided the two into five tabs so that the users can find and choose content of their interests easily.
Low-Fi + Hi-Fi
Below are some of my rough sketches, showing different ideas.
Considering experience optimization, I decided on these designs, which are convenient to both reading and visual learners.
Interactive Prototype
This prototype only covers functions that I wanted my participants to test out.
Validation
With my participants’ feedback, I iterated my designs three times and was able to satisfy the majority. As I observed my testers use the prototype, I was happy to see their improvements.
All users were able to recognize which page was active. They did not click the buttons of the currently active page.
Both the reading and visual learners spent less time looking for movies to watch as they learned about the content quickly.
All users found it easy and quick to look for specific episodes
All users found it easy to choose content by using the subcategories.
After-thoughts
This project was fun to redesign, considering the potential growth of iWantTFC. I also found it interesting to learn about visual and reading learners’ different interests of Filipinos and other ethnicities. If I were to continue to develop the user experience, I would focus on improving the redesign for other ethnic audiences. I like their constant fascination with Filipino films and being able to spread it to others, which will immensely peak the company’s growth.
